Return to hometown and see the needs of the children
Jun-Cheng Lin (Big Brother Jun to the children), the founder of CAN Culture, Art & Nature, returned to Sanxia in 2006 and found that there was a group of high-risk children with low learning achievements facing the dark alone in the community. They were like grasses growing in a corner of society, and people always neglected them because they were inconspicuous. However, grasses have tough and simple life, and they can bloom into beautiful flowers with the irrigation of dreams. So Big Brother Jun and his partners from the community initiated an accompaniment project, i.e. the “Loofah Team”, to accompany each child in going through the joys and difficulties in life, as well as irrigate them with love until they blossom into beautiful flowers.
Who are grass and green grass children?
Family – The challenges in growth before preschool
A variety of family challenges, such as low income, single parent, grandparenting, domestic violence and drugs, had resulted in many children’s lack of good interaction with parents and good educational environment since their babyhood. This affected their physical and mental development, so their basic abilities often fall behind after they enter elementary and junior high school.
School – An educational system unable to satisfy the needs for living and learning
The mainstream education was based on progressing to a higher grade, and remedial teaching was carried out for most students who were falling behind. Children could not find learning achievements, so they began to give up on themselves. Conflicts between teachers and students in junior high schools were even more obvious, and some teachers did not want these children in their classes, so the children could only choose to run away from school.
The children waiting to be watered with love
Every year in Taiwan, there are over 43,000 children from high-risk families, 23,000 high school dropouts and 4,000 middle school dropouts facing scholastic deficiency and survival challenge alone due to inadequate family function. Some of them even leave the learning site early and continue to fall into a vicious cycle. There are many children around us who are living in a gray area, close to being reported or experience learning disruption, and they don’t have support from their family or social resources.
Cultivation Action
However, change is not difficult; the most important matter is to accompany the children and guide their learning when they encounter family and learning difficulties, and change may just begin.

Green Grass Occupational School
The old hospital space by Sanxia Old Street was renovated to offer occupational cultivation courses of “learning by doing”, including food agriculture, wood carving, hair styling, coffee, etc., for accompanying teenage children in designing unique life proposals.
Build a community support system
From life to family and from schoolwork to employment,
we are trying to build a community support system that can change the lives of children.
We hope that such a support system can help more children from different communities
in finding a sense of belonging and a second home in the future.
After the children grow up, they will feedback to their community,
and lead little brothers and sisters in passing down this love.
