we established CAN Culture, Art & Nature in 2010, hoping that it would become a cultural and creative social enterprise, which is good for society and community. We wanted to drive urban and rural sustainable development through the filtration of culture and creativity. We care about various issues, such humanities and cultures, land environment, disadvantaged students and industrial innovation, and practice the ideas of culture and creativity in these issues.
Return to Hometown for Accompany
In 2006, I formed a Loofah Team at Youmu Elementary School and started growing loofah in campus with the children for them to learn farming and giving. We sold the loofahs and earned their tuitions and miscellaneous fees, school lunch fees and dream funds. I also took the children to Lanyu, learned to compose proposals, plan tour itineraries and negotiate sponsorships, as well as accomplished my first cycling trip around the island.
Grass Book House
Grass Book House was reconstructed from a stir fries restaurant by Sanxia Creek. The two-story space is divided into areas for a cafeteria, classrooms, gaming and reading. The small space carries children’s dreams and their expectations for the future. Through the learning and accompanying at Grass Book House, we hope that Grass children can possess six major capabilities, i.e. optimism and passion, responsibility and self-discipline, problem solving, social wisdom, courage to try, and thankfulness and empathy.
Green Grass Occupational School
We found the 70-year-old hospital, Ailin Hospital, along Sanxia Old Street at the end of 2016. Through the design and planning by CAN Culture, Art & Nature, we reconstructed the old hospital into “HAKSIP Village” and established a space for teenager occupational cultivation – Green Grass Occupational School.
Hold Children's Hand to Embark on the Project to Bring Disadvantaged Children Travel Around the Island to Fulfill Their Dreams with No Exit System
During summer in 2019, Grass Book House and Grass Function School organized the cycling around island project for the 4th year. Starting from Tamsui, team members would travel around the island along the west coast, which was a self-challenge with a total length of 1,012km and 2 weeks. At the departure ceremony, it also invited parents to write down words of wishes on special bands that are tied to the bicycles as wishes to children. Many team members felt touched and hugged each other to show encouragement. The island trip was kicked off with such warm scene.
LIN, JUN-CHENG, Youth Returning Home to Sanxia; A Story Began A Decade Ago; What’s Next?
For ten years, we still accompany the high-risk children in the community. The first group of children that we accompanied has gradually grown up, and we also continued to expand our companionship and the support system that we offer. We established Grass Functional School to help children exploring their futures. Each year, we still bring children to travel around the island to fulfill their dreams.
Community Resources, Sharing and Mutual Benefit, the Next Decade for the Enterprise Transformation of Can Culture Art and Nature
Established in 2015, Can Culture Art and Nature is a non-profit community organization that carries out events of different scales for sharing and mutual benefit, including accompanying children and teens in the community and operating art and cultural space in the community. However, as we engaged more with the community, we began to see that the existing organization is not sound enough, which cannot fully help us realizing our ideals. Therefore, we attempted to carry out enterprise transformation, shaping our profile as a social enterprise.
Fund Raising Project for Green Grass Occupational School - Taiwan community design
Green Grass Occupational School is the junior high department of Grass Book House. Its primary focus is the development of occupational skills. The concept of the main LOGO design is the image of the Grass children turning into flowers when they grow up and fly freely like butterflies.
