THE CAN was selected as The 2nd Social Enterprise Award of Global Views Monthly
THE CAN was established in 2010, and it is the ninth year since it was established. THE CAN has focused on four issues of "education", "employment", "survival" and "culture" of urban and rural development in the Sanxia of New Taipei City, and put forward four core business projects: "after-school companionship", "community brand", "cultural tourism" and "design and planning" to solve the social challenges of disadvantaged students education and the community culture with the passage of time.
Since 2010, we have successively renovated the old house space to set up "KOUJI Restaurant" for artistic cultural exhibitions and performances, "CAN Accommodations" for Sanxia crafts and DIY, "HIDEKAWA" to sell Taiwanese handmade soybean products, through the community industry employment of dropouts, regenerators, parents with second-time employment, and inclusive employment of disadvantaged students. To try to solve the challenges of education and employment; to connect local shokunins and artists to develop local brands, so as to make the characteristics of humanistic arts and crafts sustainable development.
THE CAN, community enterprises and volunteers, established the "Taiwan Sustainable City and Town Caring Association", and reconstructed a stir fries restaurant by Sanxia Creek for "Grass Book House" as the companion base for disadvantaged students, and the "Green Grass Occupational School" as the occupational training school for children grow from Grass (elementary class) into Green Grass (junior high class). In succession, we cooperated with 10 elementary and junior high schools in Sanxia to provide counseling after school from Monday to Saturday, bring craft culture into campus for exhibition experience courses, and cultivate educational development of local craft culture. Through profit-oriented shop management, craft DIY and design, integrating disadvantaged education and employment opportunities to develop local industries, and investing design talents and financial resources to solve local challenges, THE CAN has become a social enterprise with life-changing as our core.
It's not easy to win the award "The 2nd Social Enterprise Award of Global Views Monthly". We can see the influence of THE CAN in this society. As we heard at the award ceremony, "We know what Taiwan we want, let goodwill coexist with commerce." In the future, we will bear more social responsibility and the love for land and community. We will continue to strive forward with our original intention.
