There is an inconspicuous store beside Qingshui Zushi Temple. As you walk into the store you’ll find that it is filled with wood carving artworks, especially works using lion, elephant, qilin and leopard as the main character, which are favorites of Master Yao-Hui. The background used historical events or auspicious words as the base, and the wood applied was from stout camphor tree and cypress. Master Yao-Hui said he came to Taipei to learn wood carving right after he graduated from junior high school. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. This was how he accomplished his craftsmanship. Master Yao-Hui’s wood carving skills makes him one of the best masters in traditional temples in Taiwan. When you visit Sanxia, you must go pray at Qingshui Zushi Temple, and take a close look at the stone carving, relief, copper casting and wood carving artworks, which are all fruits of the masters’ painstaking labor.
